Nutrition & dietetics

Nine registered dietitians attached to the specialty teams rather than sitting in a separate service, so the advice matches the condition being treated.

Overview

What dietetics here actually involves

A dietitian is not a nutritionist with a newsletter. These are registered clinicians who read your chart, your bloods and your medication list before they say anything about what you eat.

Most referrals come from inside the building — a cardiologist, an endocrinologist or a gastroenterologist who wants the dietary half of a treatment plan done properly. Because the dietitian is on the same record, the advice is built around the condition rather than around a leaflet.

You can also book directly. The first appointment is fifty minutes, includes a proper dietary history, and ends with something you could actually cook this week rather than a list of forbidden foods.

Treatments & procedures

Six things that happen in this department

Everything below is done at Medice, by registered dietitians on staff. Nothing is contracted out to a commercial weight programme.

Full dietary assessment
Fifty minutes going through what you actually eat, not what you think you should say. Bloods, medication and the treating specialty's plan are read first.
Structured diabetes education
Carbohydrate counting and dose matching, run jointly with the endocrinology nurse educators so the numbers and the food are taught by people who talk to each other.
Low-FODMAP programme
The proper three-phase version — restriction, reintroduction and personalisation — rather than the internet's permanent elimination diet. Usually four appointments over three months.
Cardiac and lipid nutrition
Run alongside cardiology for people after a cardiac event or with stubborn cholesterol. The dietitian reads the same record as the cardiologist who referred you.
Body composition measurement
A two-minute measure that distinguishes muscle from fat and water, which is more useful than a scale and far more useful when weight is not the actual problem.
Pregnancy and infant feeding support
Gestational diabetes, hyperemesis, iron deficiency and weaning, delivered alongside the women's health team rather than as a separate appointment across town.

Your visit

What to expect, step by step

  1. Before you come

Keep a three-day food diary if you can, including the days that went badly. It is more useful than a perfect week, and nobody is going to judge it.

  2. Checking in

Arrive ten minutes early. Check in at the desk or on your phone. Once you are checked in, the average wait is seven minutes.

  3. With the dietitian

Fifty minutes. Your bloods, your medicines and the referring specialty's plan are read first, then the conversation is about food you would actually eat.

  4. After the visit

The plan reaches your portal the same day, and the specialty team who referred you sees it too — one record, not two conversations.

Equipment & technology

Built instead of a bigger lobby

Everything on this list is ours and sits inside a Medice building. Nothing is contracted out to a commercial weight programme, and nothing here is selling you a product.

The dietitians are on the same record as the specialty teams — which is the difference between advice and a treatment plan.

Nutrition & dietetics FAQ

The five we are asked most

Anything not answered here, ask when you book — the person on the phone is a nurse, not a call centre.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?
No. Book directly. Most people are referred from inside the building, but you do not have to see a specialist first to get an appointment.
What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?
A dietitian is a registered clinician who can read your chart, your bloods and your medication list, and whose advice forms part of a treatment plan. The title is protected; nutritionist is not.
Is this a weight-loss programme?
No. Weight is one of sixteen reasons people are seen here, and for many of them it is not the point at all. Nothing here is selling you a product.
Will the specialist who referred me see the plan?
Yes. The dietitian writes into the same record, so your cardiologist or endocrinologist reads the plan rather than being told about it later.
How many appointments will I need?
Three or four for most things. The low-FODMAP programme is four over about three months, because the reintroduction phase is the part that actually matters.
