What gastroenterology here actually involves

Gut symptoms are common and mostly not sinister, which is exactly why they need a proper look rather than reassurance over the phone. The first appointment is thirty-five minutes and usually ends with either a plan or a scope date.

Endoscopy happens in our own suite at Pearl District. Sedation is included rather than an extra, the list runs five days a week, and the fortnight wait is a real number rather than an aspiration.

Inflammatory bowel disease is managed as a long relationship, not a series of episodes. One gastroenterologist, one specialist nurse you can email, and infusions given at Beaverton without a hospital admission.

Treatments & procedures

Six things that happen in this department

Everything below is done at Medice. Nothing here is sent out to a third party you have never heard of.

Gastroscopy
A camera through the mouth to look at the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Ten minutes, sedation included, and you will be told what was seen before you go home.
Colonoscopy
A full look at the large bowel with sedation. The preparation is the hard part and we will talk you through it properly. Polyps are removed during the same procedure rather than at a second visit.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy
A shorter, lower-bowel examination with a simpler preparation, used for rectal bleeding and for monitoring known colitis. Usually no sedation and you can drive home.
Biologic infusions for IBD
Given in the day unit at Beaverton, not in a hospital. Two to three hours with a chair, a nurse and wifi, on a schedule that fits round your work rather than a ward round.
Breath testing
Non-invasive tests for H. pylori, lactose intolerance and bacterial overgrowth. You blow into a tube at intervals over a couple of hours; nothing about it hurts.
Liver assessment and fibroscan
An ultrasound-based measure of liver stiffness, done in clinic in about fifteen minutes, that answers a question blood tests leave open.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Before you come

    Bring a list of what you eat on a normal day and any medicines, including the over-the-counter ones. Do not stop a proton pump inhibitor before asking us.

  2. Checking in

    Arrive ten minutes early. Check in at the desk or on your phone. Once you are checked in, the average wait is ten minutes.

  3. With the gastroenterologist

    Thirty-five minutes of history and examination. If a scope is the answer, the date is set before you leave, with the preparation explained face to face.

  4. After the visit

    Notes, results and the plan reach your portal the same day. Your GP gets the same letter automatically, not a summary.

Do I need a referral to see a gastroenterologist?
No. Book directly. If you have had scopes or scans elsewhere, tell us who holds the reports when you book and we will request them beforehand.
Is sedation included in the price of a scope?
Yes. It is part of the published price rather than an extra added on the day. You will need someone to take you home afterwards.
How long will I wait for a colonoscopy?
Two weeks is the current booking window, because the suite is ours and the list runs five days a week rather than being borrowed from a hospital.
Will I find out the result on the day?
For what was seen, yes — the gastroenterologist talks to you once you are awake. Anything sent to histology takes about five days and comes back by phone.
Can I get my IBD infusions here?
Yes, in the day unit at Beaverton. Two to three hours in a chair with a nurse, scheduled around your week rather than a hospital ward round.
