Endocrine conditions are managed rather than cured, which makes continuity the whole point. You get one endocrinologist and one nurse educator, and they are the same two people in three years' time.

Diabetes care is built around the data rather than around the appointment. Continuous glucose monitors are fitted and read here, and the nurse educator can adjust between visits instead of leaving you to wait three months for a number to be looked at.

Thyroid, adrenal and pituitary work runs alongside it. Bloods are taken in the building, most results are back the same day, and a dose change does not need a second appointment to happen.

Six things that happen in this department

Everything below is done at Medice. Nothing here is sent out to a third party you have never heard of.

Continuous glucose monitor fitting
A sensor on the arm, fitted in ten minutes, streaming to your phone and to us. The nurse educator reads the trace with you rather than handing you a printout.
Insulin pump start and review
A half-day to set the pump up, then weekly contact for the first month. The people who taught you to use it are the people who answer when it misbehaves.
Thyroid ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration
Scan and, if needed, a needle sample of a nodule in the same appointment. Local anaesthetic, a few minutes, and the result back inside a week.
Dynamic endocrine testing
Timed blood tests over a morning to work out whether a gland is over- or under-producing. You will be here two to four hours; bring something to read.
Bone density scanning
A DEXA scan for osteoporosis risk, taking about fifteen minutes with no injections and very little radiation. Repeated every two years where treatment is running.
Nurse educator clinics
Half-hour appointments between medical reviews, for carbohydrate counting, injection technique, sick-day rules and the things that actually decide how a week goes.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Before you come

    Bring your meter, your pump or your sensor, whichever you use, and your current medicines. If we have asked for fasting bloods, do not eat after midnight.

  2. Checking in

    Arrive ten minutes early. Check in at the desk or on your phone. Once you are checked in, the average wait is nine minutes.

  3. With the endocrinologist

    Forty-five minutes, with the nurse educator joining for part of it. Bloods are taken in the building and most results are back before you leave.

  4. After the visit

    Notes, results and any dose change reach your portal the same day, and the nurse educator's direct line comes with them.

Anything not answered here, ask when you book — the person on the phone is a nurse, not a call centre.

Do I need a referral to see an endocrinologist?
No. Book directly. If a GP has been managing your diabetes or thyroid, tell us when you book and we will pull the last two years of results before you arrive.
Will I see the same doctor each time?
Yes, and the same nurse educator. Endocrine conditions are managed over years rather than fixed in a visit, so continuity is the part that actually changes outcomes.
Can I keep my current insulin pump or sensor?
Almost always. We work with the major platforms, and if you already have kit that suits you there is no reason to change it just because you have changed clinic.
How quickly do blood results come back?
Most endocrine bloods are run in our own laboratory at Pearl District and are back the same day — often before you have left the building.
Can I contact someone between appointments?
Yes. Your nurse educator has a direct line and answers on working days, which is the point of attaching one to every panel.
