Neurology is mostly history. The first appointment is fifty minutes because what you noticed, when, and in what order is more diagnostic than any scan — and fifty minutes is what it takes to get that properly.

Where testing helps, it is in the building. EEG and nerve conduction studies run at Lloyd Center four days a week, and MRI is at Pearl District and Beaverton, so the sequence of appointment, test and answer fits inside a fortnight instead of a season.

Three conditions get their own clinic rather than a general slot: headache, epilepsy and memory. Each is run by the same neurologists every week, which is what makes the follow-up worth anything.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)
Electrodes on the scalp recording electrical activity, usually for about an hour. Painless, no needles, and you can drive home afterwards. The report is with your neurologist inside seventy-two hours.
Nerve conduction studies and EMG
Small electrical pulses along a nerve and a fine needle in the muscle. Uncomfortable for a few minutes rather than painful, and it is the test that separates a trapped nerve from a neuropathy.
Headache clinic
A dedicated slot rather than a general appointment, including a diary review and, where indicated, greater occipital nerve blocks or preventive prescribing started the same day.
Memory assessment
Ninety minutes with a neurologist and a psychologist, cognitive testing, bloods and imaging arranged together. We ask you to bring someone who knows you well.
Botulinum toxin for chronic migraine
A course of injections across the head and neck, repeated quarterly for people who meet the criteria. Twenty minutes, done in a treatment room here.
Lumbar puncture
A day-case procedure under local anaesthetic, used where the diagnosis genuinely needs it. You stay for an hour afterwards and the samples go to our own laboratory.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Before you come

    Write down when the symptoms started and what makes them worse. If someone has watched an episode, bring them — what they saw matters as much as what you felt.

  2. Checking in

    Arrive ten minutes early. Check in at the desk or on your phone. Once you are checked in, the average wait is twelve minutes.

  3. With the neurologist

    Fifty minutes, most of it history and a bedside examination. Any EEG, nerve study or scan is booked before you leave the building.

  4. After the visit

    Notes and the plan reach your portal the same day. Your GP gets the same letter automatically, not a summary.

The five we are asked most

Anything not answered here, ask when you book — the person on the phone is a nurse, not a call centre.

Do I need a referral to see a neurologist?
No. Book directly. If you have had a scan or an EEG elsewhere, tell us who holds it when you book and we will request it before the appointment.
Why is the first appointment so long?
Because neurology is diagnosed on history far more than on imaging. Fifty minutes is what it takes to get the sequence of what happened straight, and it is usually what produces the answer.
Is the EEG uncomfortable?
No. Electrodes are stuck to your scalp with paste, you lie still for about an hour, and there is nothing to feel. You will want to wash your hair afterwards.
Can I drive after a first seizure?
Not until you have been assessed and the legal position has been explained to you — that conversation happens at the first appointment, and we put the dates in writing.
Who do I see at follow-up?
The same neurologist. The headache, epilepsy and memory clinics are run by the same doctors every week, which is the only thing that makes follow-up worth attending.
