What dermatology here actually involves

Two thirds of the people who come here are worried about one mark. That appointment is twenty minutes, it includes a dermatoscope rather than a glance across the room, and you will be told what it is before you leave.

The rest is medical dermatology — the long conditions that do not resolve on their own. Eczema, psoriasis, acne and rosacea are managed by the same dermatologist over time, and the photographs stay on your record so change is measured rather than remembered.

Every skin type is assessed with equipment configured for it. Dermoscopy calibrated only for pale skin misses disease in darker skin, and the mapping system here is set up for the full range.

Six things that happen in this department

Everything below is done at Medice. Nothing here is sent out to a third party you have never heard of.

Whole-body mole mapping
A photographic map of every mark on your skin, repeated annually so change is measured against last year rather than against memory. Forty minutes, and you get the images.
Dermoscopy and lesion assessment
A magnified, polarised look at a single mark. Most appointments end here, with a straight answer. If it needs removing, that is usually booked for the same week.
Skin biopsy
Local anaesthetic, ten minutes, one or two stitches. The sample goes to our own histopathology partner and the result is with you in five days — you will get a call, not a letter.
Excision of skin lesions
Removal of a mole, cyst or skin cancer under local anaesthetic. Done in a treatment room here, not a hospital theatre, and the wound check is booked before you leave.
Cryotherapy
Liquid nitrogen for warts, actinic keratoses and other surface lesions. Seconds per lesion, mildly uncomfortable, and usually done in the same appointment as the diagnosis.
Patch testing for contact allergy
Panels applied to your back and read across three visits in one week. Tedious rather than painful, and the only reliable way to find what your skin is reacting to.

What to expect, step by step

  1. Before you come

    Come without makeup or nail polish on the area we are looking at. If a mark has changed, a photo from a few months ago is genuinely useful.

  2. Checking in

    Arrive ten minutes early. Check in at the desk or on your phone. Once you are checked in, the average wait is eight minutes.

  3. With the dermatologist

    Twenty minutes, with a dermatoscope rather than a glance. If a biopsy is the right next step, it is usually done in the same room.

  4. After the visit

    Notes and any photographs reach your portal the same day. Biopsy results come by phone within five days, not by letter.

Anything not answered here, ask when you book — the person on the phone is a nurse, not a call centre.

Do I need a referral to see a dermatologist?
No. Book directly. If you are worried about a specific mark, say so when you book and we will put you in a slot long enough to biopsy it the same visit if needed.
How fast can I be seen about a changing mole?
Five days is the routine average, and urgent lesion slots are kept free every day. If a GP or a photograph suggests something needs looking at quickly, we will find you a slot inside forty-eight hours.
How long do biopsy results take?
Five days. You will get a phone call from the dermatologist who took the sample, and the report appears in your portal at the same time.
Is the equipment suitable for darker skin?
Yes. Dermoscopy and the mapping system are configured across the full range of skin types, which matters because equipment calibrated only for pale skin misses disease in darker skin.
Can you treat acne, or is this only about skin cancer?
Both. Medical dermatology — acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea — is roughly a third of this department's work, managed by the same dermatologist over time rather than a new one each visit.
