Directions to Pearl DistrictFamily medicine, and the founder of this practice. Twenty-seven years in Portland, much of it with the same families — she now sees patients three days a week at Pearl District.

Clinical philosophy
Most of what goes wrong in primary care goes wrong between appointments — a result nobody chased, a medication nobody stopped, a symptom mentioned once and never followed up. The job is mostly attention.
She keeps her own panel rather than rotating, which means the person reading your chart in year nine is the person who wrote it in year one. Appointments run thirty minutes because fifteen is not long enough to hear the second thing you came in to say.
She will tell you when a test is unlikely to change anything, and she will say so plainly. Patients who want a clinician to agree with them quickly are usually happier elsewhere, and she is comfortable saying that too.
Focus areas
Sixteen things she treats regularly. Anything outside them she refers inside the practice rather than sending you to find someone yourself.
Training
Nineteen years of education and certification before this practice existed, and continuous recertification since.
Portland. Two summers interpreting Swedish and Danish for patients at a community clinic in Northeast Portland, which is where the idea of family practice arrived.
Portland. Elected to Alpha Omega Alpha in her third year. Final-year thesis on continuity of care in rural practice.
Three years, chief resident in the last of them. Rotations at the Portland VA and a six-month rural placement in Pendleton.
Licence MD26114. She opened the first clinic the same year with one nurse and 212 patients on the books.
American Board of Family Medicine, passed at first sitting. Recertified in 2011 and again in 2021.
Awarded for teaching and service. She has precepted OHSU students every spring since 2004.

She noticed a medication I had been on for six years that nobody had reviewed. We stopped it. Three weeks later the dizziness I had put down to age was gone.
Maya EllisonPatient since 2019I have seen her for eleven years. She has never once opened my chart in front of me and looked surprised by what was in it.
Daniel ChoPatient since 2015She told me a scan would not change what we did next, and explained why. It was the first time a doctor had talked me out of a test.
