Clinical philosophy
Talk to the child, then the parent
From about six, a child can tell you where it hurts better than anyone in the room. She asks them first, which takes longer and is usually faster.
Most of what comes through a pediatric door gets better on its own. Saying so clearly — and saying what would change that — is more useful than a prescription written to end the appointment.
She writes the plan down for the parent before they leave, including the part about when to come back. Half of a worried night is not knowing what counts as worse.
