Clinical philosophy

A diagnosis is a starting point, not a verdict

A label is useful exactly as far as it tells you what to try next. When it stops doing that, she says so and revisits it rather than defending it.

Medication and therapy are not a ranking. Most people do best with some of both, and the useful question is which one to change when things are not moving.

First appointments run an hour because a psychiatric history taken in twenty minutes is a history missing the part that matters. Follow-ups are shorter and more frequent.

Training

Where she trained

Sixteen years of education and certification, and continuous recertification since.

  1. BA, Psychology — Brandeis University

Waltham. Two years on a crisis line, which is where she learned to listen without steering.

  2. MD — Albert Einstein College of Medicine

New York. Clinical years largely in the Bronx, much of it in Spanish.

  3. Residency, psychiatry — Oregon Health & Science University

Portland. Four years, chief resident in the last of them.

  4. Board certified in psychiatry

American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Recertified in 2019.

  5. Licensed in Oregon, and joined this practice

  • The first appointment was an hour. Nobody had ever asked me the whole story before, and the plan was different because of it.

  • She helped me come off a tablet I had been on for nine years, slowly, and checked in every fortnight while I did.

  • She said the label I had been given no longer fit and changed it. It was a relief, not a setback.
